PAINT COLOUR

Lightening up a living space isn’t as simple as painting everything in your house brilliant white. If you face north, for example, and want to paint a space a light colour, choose off-whites with a hint of warmth to prevent the space feeling too chilly, while south-facing rooms can take cooler whites and light off-greys. Think about the hues and strength of colour you use in the home – use the Colour section to get more ideas about biophilic colour.

CLUTTER

Too much stuff can be a light stealer. Give furnishings and décor plenty of room to breathe by not overcrowding a space, seek out effective storage systems, and keep your living and relaxing spaces as tidy as possible.

FLOOR COVERINGS

If you need more light in an internal space, think about using pale timber (such as limed oak), painted floorboards, bright linoleum, pale natural floorings, light colour stone or light wool carpets.

MIRRORS

Very shiny surfaces reflect almost all the natural light that hits them. The light bounces back at the same angle it came from, so if the light source is right in front of a mirror, it bounces straight back. If the light comes from a 45-degree angle to the left, it’ll bounce off at a 45-degree angle to the right. Understanding how mirrors reflect light means you can play with them to either reflect a natural view from the outside, or direct natural light into dark areas of a room.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Heavy curtains can help a room feel ‘night-timey’, especially if street lights are a problem. If you do have heavy drapes, however, make sure they are well drawn back in the daytime and steer clear of light-blocking elements such as pelmets if a room already lacks light. Lighter window treatments such as Roman blinds, louvred shutters and sheers are great for day rooms, or if light pollution isn’t an issue, ‘naked’ windows (without any cover) are ideal if a space isn’t overlooked.
